According to the jobs listing for the Social Security Administration, claims representatives “assist individuals in establishing entitlement to benefits under Social Security programs.” This person will conduct your initial interview, gather information, and perform the initial processing of your claim. Your interview can be completed in person or by telephone.

The claims representative performs a preliminary eligibility check for both SSDI and SSI benefits based on the information you provide in your application. If you meet the initial qualifications, the claims representative sends your file to the Disability Determination Services (DDS) office in your state to determine if your disability meets the medical requirements for disability.

The agent in the DDS office must review your medical records and other information you provided to determine if your medical condition meets all of the elements to be considered a disability. The agent will sometimes request additional information if your medical records are not sufficient to establish if you are disabled for the purposes of Social Security.

Once the DDS has completed its investigation and determined that your medical condition qualifies as a disability, the file will be returned to your local Social Security office for the claims representative to complete a final eligibility check. The entire process can take several months to complete and you can be denied for a variety of reasons even though your medical condition does render you unable to work.
