What Should I Bring To Our First Meeting to Discuss Bankruptcy?

Many of our clients are very nervous about their first appointment with our office to discuss bankruptcy; however, there is nothing to be nervous about.  We are here to help you find an affordable solution for financial problems. Because we do understand that some people are nervous about meeting with an attorney to discuss bankruptcy, we work very hard to make our bankruptcy consultation as simple and stress-free as possible. During our first meeting, we simply ask questions about your financial situation and listen to your concerns so that we can help you determine your bankruptcy options and non-bankruptcy alternatives, if available. To help us do that, you can do several things to prepare for our first meeting to discuss bankruptcy.

How to Prepare to Discuss Bankruptcy

with an Attorney

When you are preparing for your bankruptcy consultation, it is very helpful if you bring any information you have regarding the value of your larger assets (i.e. real estate, vehicles, boats, etc.) and an informal list of who you owe and how much you owe. Brining a copy of your last pay stubs and tax return is also very helpful in determining the chapter of bankruptcy you are qualified to file. If you have been served with any legal papers including foreclosures or collection actions, you should bring those with you as well. The purpose of this first meeting is to discuss bankruptcy options and having this information is very helping in determining your legal options to resolve your debt problems.

The attorney will ask you questions about your current financial situation as well as some questions about your recent financial transactions. The information we will be asking you is information that you can easily answer without doing a lot of research and digging through records. We need to understand how you arrived at your current financial situation so that we can offer you the best advice regarding your bankruptcy options.

We spend as much time listening to you during this first meeting as we do explaining bankruptcy and answering your bankruptcy questions. Before we conclude the meeting, you will have the information you need about the advantages and disadvantages of bankruptcy, what is entailed in filing bankruptcy and the cost of filing a bankruptcy to make an informed decision about how to handle your financial problems.
